 Report

Mick Dean organised an even bigger event this year, taking control of four courts in an event which he describes as having ‘as much to do with playing a lot of tennis as winning’. This is especially so for the more junior divisions, although even the First pairs were playing in Round Robin format to ensure plenty of play. At least five players at 1st Pair level – one each from Rugby, Oratory, Clifton, Eton and Radley – are playing at mid-20 handicap level, and there was some impressive tennis to be seen by the end of the day at Oratory. In total, 66 young people played and represented 12 schools

The events and venues were as follows:

1st Pairs, playing at Oratory. This included teams from Canford, Clifton, Eton, Oratory, Radley, Rugby, and St Edwards

2nd Pairs, playing at Hardwick. This included teams from Rugby, Canford, Clifton, Oratory, Radley [A and B], and St Edwards

Colts Pairs, playing at Radley. This included teams from Canford, Clifton, Oratory, Eton, Hayling, Portsmouth Grammar, Radley [A and B], and Rugby

Junior Handicap U14 event at Oxford. This included teams from Charterhouse, Westbourne House [A, B and C], Oratory, and Radley [A and B]

Results

The main result, of course, was that a lot of young people played a lot of tennis in a new venue and against new players. As for taking home some silverware, this is the outcome:

1st pairs. Eton and Oratory shared first place, then Clifton, Radley, Rugby, Canford, and relative newcomers St Edwards

2nd Pairs. Radley B pipped Radley A into first place, followed by Clifton, Rugby, Oratory, Canford, St Edwards (DNS)

Senior Team Trophy (combined 1st & 2nd prs). Shared between Radley, Oratory & Clifton – well buy some more tankards and send them round!

Colts Pairs. These were played firstly in groups of 3, with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each group then playing each other. The final outcome was Hayling, Radley A, Portsmouth Grammar, Radley B, Clifton, Eton, Oratory, Canford, and Rugby.

Junior Handicap U14. CORRECTION - PLEASE NOTE: Charterhouse won this group, followed by Westbourne A and Westbourne B, then Radley B, Westbourne C, and Radley A. Churchers School DNS.
