Chetwood Trophy Report 2007

A record nineteen entrants gathered at Hampton Court Palace to fight it out for the handicap Champion of Champions trophy. They were of various different ages and handicaps but, when the dust settled, the combined age of the finalists was only 36.

Our winner Toby Bawden (age 17 and handicap 40), from Prested Hall, was sublime in both the Round Robin Stages and the Final, but narrowly squeaked through his semi against David Sloan 10/8. Benjamin Stott (age 19 and handicap 49) from Bristol and Bath, vanquished Nicola Cavill who was representing the home club in the other semi-final, but could not match the raw power of Toby’s volleys when the title was at stake.

The weekend featured probably the most exciting tennis this tournament has seen at Hampton Court, as almost all the matches were well contested until the final round.  We look forward to more of the same next year.
