Matthew Alden breaks the World Record

27 Jun 2016

On Saturday 25th through Sunday (am) 26th June at Oxford, Matthew Alden provisionally broke the World Record for Most Consecutive opponents, Real Tennis Singles.

I’m delighted to say that, subject to official ratification, Matthew Alden completed his 28th match in the early hours of Sunday morning to beat the existing record of 26 consecutive opponents faced.

The games were all played at an incredible pace and in great sporting spirit and I would like to thank all those that took part in the challenge, both as players and markers, and to all those that came along to support Matthew in his efforts.

Particular thanks are due to Adam Jeffrey, Jonathan Clark and Freddy Adam. Without their unstinting support during the event, the attempt would not have been possible.

It will take us a while to compile the evidence and Guinness ask that we allow a minimum of eight weeks for them to review thereafter, so it will likely be several months before we know if the record will be officially recognised.

This in no way detracts from the remarkable performance that Matthew put in. It was an amazing display of athleticism and physical and mental endurance and was all the more remarkable for the fact that at the end of each game, regardless of the result, Matthew had a smile and kind words for all of his opponents.

I’m sure that you’ll congratulate Matthew when you see him and his JustGiving page is still active should you wish to contribute.

The record stood at 26 opponents.

Matthew will using the attempt to raise money for two charities:

1)      KEEN - - KEEN is a registered charity and a joint organisation of Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University. It provides social, sporting and recreational activities for children and adults with special needs in the surrounding area.

2)      Many Hopes - - Many Hopes provides loving homes and excellent education for girls and boys in Kenya. Founded by Bradden Young (01.05.75 – 04.07.14) – a life-long friend of Matthew's.
