MORETON MORRELL TCC TOUR TO THE BATTLEFIELDS OF FRANCE AND BELGIUM
Have you been meaning to explore the Great War Battlefields of France and Belgium but have never got round to arranging a visit?
Now is your chance! Andrew Hamilton is organising a visit for MMTCC members and Real Tennis and Rackets players to the Great War Battlefield sites of France and Belgium from 10th
– 14th July 2022. There is a limited number of places remaining and T&RA members will be most welcome to join the group. In brief, the schedule is:
‘On arrival in France, we will be visiting the Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge and the historic city of Arras. Day 2 will be spent in the Somme visiting various locations on the front line of 1st July 1916, one of the worst days in British military history when there were 58,000 casualties (sites include the Thiepval memorial, Ulster Tower, Newfoundland Park and the Lochnagar crater.) On Day 3 we make our way to Ypres in Belgium via the magnificent Indian memorial at Neuve Chapelle and the site of the Christmas Truce near ‘Plugstreet’ Wood which was initiated in that sector by Andrew’s grandfather. The day concludes with attendance at the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. Day 4 will be spent in the Ypres Salient visiting locations including the mine craters on the Messines Ridge, and the breath-taking British Tyne Cot cemetery and the German ossuary at Langemark. On the way home on Day 5, we visit Brandhoek cemetery, the final resting place of Noel Chavasse, the Great War’s only double VC, Toc H at Poperinghe and the fascinating Lijssenthoek British cemetery.’
The party will gather at Moreton Morrell early on the Sunday morning but it will be possible to arrange pick-ups at the service stations on the M25 and some may wish to meet us at the Dover ferry.
If you have never visited the Great War sites of the Western Front, this is an opportunity not to be missed!
