The T&RA October Newsletter 2020

Welcome to this month's edition of the T&RA's newsletter! Lots of exciting things have been going on around the country so we have highlighted our favourite parts of the Tennis and Rackets season so far.

But first, in our latest update following the Government's 3-Tier announcement on 12th October 2020, the T&RA Project Restart Team have set out the relevant provisions of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 regulations and links to those regulations below:

  • In Tier 2 and 3 areas, indoor sport is only permitted for the same household, so no Tennis or Rackets except for the same household. Solo Rackets is permitted. Coaching is still permitted with one household or bubble. Under 18s may continue to play subject to T&RA guidelines with social distancing.
  • In Tier 1 areas the Rule of 6 continues so both singles and doubles are possible, subject to T&RA Play Safe guidelines. No competitive doubles currently endorsed.
These tables summarise the restrictions for each tier of local COVID alert levels in England. We advise that you continue to check our return to play guidance and check with your club before playing.
Annual Awards 2019/20
Congratulations to all players who have been nominated as Tennis and Rackets Annual Award Winners 2019/20. With only 75% of the season played this year due to Covid-19 restrictions it is a very big achievement and we look forward to some more fantastic play to come.
Investing in Professionals (IiP) aims to provide an opportunity for young sports people to secure an enjoyable and financially stable long-term career in Real Tennis. This will be achieved by combining a nationally recognised apprenticeship with business, commercial and Real Tennis skills. The programme also sets a benchmark of quality for all Professionals in the game to aspire to and training opportunities to support anyone willing to develop themselves. We have teamed up with Sport Structures to deliver the training and develop an accreditation system.
The programme has launched and a number of promising applicants will be interviewed in the next 7-14 days. We are delighted to announce that Wellington has agreed to take on one of the first apprentices – exciting times ahead.

There is an appeal from our friends in America in an effort to save Washington Real Tennis. On 22nd September The Westwood Country Club voted to approve the project to build a new tennis court to replace the existing one.  With over $2.6 million raised from within Washington, they are asking for help to fund the remaining gap of $750,000 by the deadline of February 2021. Washington is grateful for all those who have already reached out to offer their encouragement and support.

A Successful Return of Rackets for Clubs and Schools

Wellington very kindly hosted a successful Rackets Exhibition Evening with players Tom Billings, James Coyne, Mike Bailey, and Alex Titchener-Barrett. There was an exciting finish with Bailey vs Billings, both unbeaten going into the final match against each other. Mike took an early lead with some aggressive hitting and big forehands. Tom battled well but couldn’t quite recover. The best of one format is always tricky for a favourite. Mike came through 15/8.
