Over 40’s British Open real tennis singles: By Dan Jones

As usual the Over 40’s British Open singles was bathed in glorious sunshine with the late arrival of our summer.

The tennis was just as bright with a plethora brilliant match play throughout the competition, which started Friday at 5pm to accommodate the large draw.

No upsets in the early rounds with Peter Wright cruising into the semi-final with a straight sets win over Nick Jones to set up a show down with Cambridge Professional, Peter Paterson who had a bye to the semi-final stage.

The match of the day was the epic encounter between Andrew Jameson and John Prenn.  12 points separated the pair but somebody forgot to tell Andrew who played the match of his career!  Andrew put John under extreme pressure from the very first point to the very last point. Andrew took a 5-4 lead in the first only for John to battle back and take the first set 6/5. Andrew dug deeper if that was possible and didn’t make the same mistake in the second and served out the set 6/4 to level the match. The final set was tight all the way but John used his experience and guile to win the match 6/1.

Roman Krznaric took on a very on form Chris Swan in the last quarter final and Chris raised his game to new heights and made Roman work for every point of the match. Roman was too strong in the end and won a place in the semi final against John Prenn (6/2 6/0).

Semi Finals: Peter Wright was not in a charitable mood when he took on Peter Paterson in the semi-final. Wright started strong and got stronger throughout the match and whatever Paterson tried it was dealt with formidable precision. Peter Wright won a place in the final with a 6/0 6/0 win.

The second semi-final was a thriller from the outset, with John Prenn attacking every shot and chasing down the impossible. Roman never really settled into the match, largely due to the relentless pressure and athleticism of John Prenns attacking game. Roman battled valiantly back into the match but John had all the answers and won a place in the final with a 6/2 6/3 victory.

The final was much anticipated by the Seacourt faithful and they weren’t disappointed.  Both players started strong but it was quite clear from early on that Peter meant business and was clinical in his approach. John Prenn seemed as fresh as he was in his first match but couldn’t find a chink in Peters armour and Peter went on to regain his title with an emphatic 6/1 6/0 victory.

Back draw:

The first and second round losers were automatically entered into the back draw which is a knock out half handicap singles competition.

Nick Jones reached the final of the back draw with strong victories over Simon Willis (6/2 6/3) and Simon De Halpert (6/1 6/5).  He took on the formidable Chris Swan who reached the final with fine wins over Simon Flynn (6/1 6/1) and Nick Danby (6/2 6/2). Nick Jones raced off to a 4.1 lead with a series of perfect shots and looked in total control before Chris worked out what was happening and clawed his way back into the match and stole the first set 6/5 and then used the momentum to win the match with precision railroads and cut shots, (6/5 6/0).
