Herbert Cup 2012

The Herbert Cup Invitational 2012

This is the fourth year that The Herbert Cup has been played. It’s an invitational tournament and like no other in the Real Tennis calendar.

Players are selected not just on the acumen on the Tennis court but also their prowess in the bar. Fines are noted down throughout the day by the committee for various blunders on the Tennis court. These fines are then issued at the post tournament BBQ.

With two world champions playing and 9 players under a 10 handicap the draw was very strong. Highest handicap player is paired with the lowest handicap and there are various rules that are unique to the tournament.

The final was a closely fought battle between Adrian Fawcus and Sarah Vigrass vs. Andrew Lyons and Christopher Kurkjian. After a 3-1 lead Fawcus and Vigrass were looking good. Lyons then really turned it on. There were some excellent rests but it always seemed that Lyons was in control. Lyons made use of Kurkjian’s excellent volleying and they eventually won the match 8/3.

I don’t think any of the players or spectators will forget this year’s tournament as we are delighted to announce that Matty Ronaldson and Courtney De Bolt got engaged over the weekend. We wish you all the best Matty and Courtney! Matty, we hope this won’t be the end of your HC career now that you are engaged?!

Thank you to Prested Hall and also our sponsors HS Liquid Assets and Liquid Nightclub. Most importantly thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Vigrass for hosting the tournament BBQ.
