American Squash Tennis Returns to UK; Moreton Morrell to Host World Championships

Moreton Morrell will be hosting the American Squash Tennis World Championships on 9 February.

To say that American Squash Tennis didn’t ever really catch on in the UK would be an understatement; in fact only one court was ever built (at Moreton Morrell Tennis Court Club), predictably by an American. A mixture – as you’d imagine – of tennis and squash, in the USA there were hundreds of courts, with the height of the game’s popularity in the first half of the 20th century. But thereafter it dwindled, and the last official US National Championships were held in 1995.

But it’s back! Moreton Morrell Tennis Court Club held unofficial World Championships on its beautifully restored court in 2012 and 2015 and is about to host them again. Participants include the last US National Champion (Gary Squires) who is flying in from the States to take on the mantle of #1 seed! The other participants include an unofficial world champion, a professional tennis player, the club Chairman and the leading author on AST, the brilliantly named Jim Zug.

This latest unofficial World Championship is in part a test event for next year when the Real Tennis World Championship Doubles tournament comes to Moreton and it is hoped to hold a larger American Squash Tennis tournament alongside it. If you are interested in spectating at either event please contact pro@mmtcc.org. Tickets will be available for the World Doubles later this year.

For the AST World Championship on February 9th there are no tickets, though we need to know you’re coming and you may wish to donate to help us preserve our historic building and sports.
