In Memory of William Stogdon (15th October 1949 – 18th May 2025)
We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of William Stogdon, who died on Saturday, 18th May 2025, at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital following a brief but severe illness.
William was a passionate and longstanding player of Real Tennis, with a lifelong commitment to the sport. His best handicaps in Real Tennis were 27 and 28, reflecting both his skill and dedication.
He was a member of The Hyde, since moving to Devon, the Old Harrovians and the T&RA. He had been a member of Newmarket when living in Saffron Walden and was part of their victorious Boomerang team on one of the occasions he went to Melbourne. He had also been an early member of the Dedanists' Society.
William was an enthusiastic supporter of Real Tennis well into his later years. He was particularly involved in developments at the Bordeaux court and continued to compete, notably returning for the Kressmann Trophy after its post-pandemic resumption in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
He was a frequent visitor to Radley, where he enjoyed playing against his brother Nick and his enduring enthusiasm was a source of inspiration to many.
William’s passing will be a great loss to the Real Tennis community. He is survived by his partner Penelope along with Jennie and Tors, who remained at his side during his final days. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be private, with a memorial celebration of William’s life likely to take place later this summer.
He will be greatly missed.
