Real Tennis World Record Attempt: Over 23 Serves a Minute for a Full Hour!
On August 9, Jesmond Dene member Chris Pearson will attempt to break the world record for the most Real Tennis serves completed in one hour, while raising money for Smile for Life and the Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club Heritage Fund.
The weekend of Sunday, August 9, will be an exciting one as Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club member Chris Pearson will be attempting to break the world record for the most Real Tennis serves completed in one hour, while raising money for two causes that mean a great deal to the club.
75% of the money raised will go to Smile For Life, a fantastic North East children’s charity that has previously been supported by the club. They do incredible work with disadvantaged children and young people across the region, and it is a charity Jesmond is very proud to support.
The remaining 25% will go to the Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club Heritage Fund.
The Heritage Fund is something that perhaps not everyone within the Real Tennis community is aware of. It has been established specifically to help protect the future of the historic club building. Every penny donated to the fund is ring-fenced and can only be used for the upkeep and preservation of the building.
As anyone involved with Jesmond’s old Real Tennis courts will appreciate, maintaining these wonderful buildings is an ongoing challenge. Whether it is a roof, structural work or another major repair in years to come, the Heritage Fund gives the club a way of building up reserves specifically to protect the club and its home for future generations.
Some people have already been incredibly generous in supporting the fund, and Chris’s world record attempt gives us a great opportunity to bring it to the attention of the wider Real Tennis community while also raising money for Smile For Life.
Chris takes on the challenge this coming Sunday, 9 August, and the current record stands at 1,385 serves — so he will need to serve at an average of over 23 serves every minute for a full hour to beat it!
