Sydney Court Development

Sydney Real Tennis Proposed new real tennis club at Moore Park (in the heart of metropolitan Sydney)

Good news down under...

Project update
The project to re-establish Real Tennis in Sydney has progressed since our last report in December. We have now engaged architects to draw up plans for the club and it is exciting to see how the new courts will sit so comfortably next to the old Moore Park Toll House and adjacent to Moore Park Golf Club.

Our vision is to build a first class real tennis club in central Sydney. The development, which is still awaiting approval, will involve renovating the Toll House and erecting two Real Tennis courts adjacent to this historic location.
The Centennial Parklands Trust which manages the site is actively working on plans to restore the Toll House and upgrade the surrounding precinct which includes a golf club, driving range and lawn tennis courts.
Once those plans are finalised, the Trust will call for development proposals for the site, at which time SRTC will be able to submit detailed proposals and architectural plans.

Background
The earliest Real Tennis court in Sydney dates back to 1836, and the game was played more recently at Macquarie University until 2006. A new club was incorporated in April 2011, and has embarked on an extensive search for an ideal location for a replacement court. Last year we made a breakthrough with The Centennial Parklands Trust which has been actively looking for an alternate use for the Toll House, and a business partner to help with the development.
Built in 1860, the Toll House was used to collect tolls from the travellers journeying between Sydney and La Perouse. It is located in a blue ribbon location, right opposite the Sydney Cricket Ground and just minutes from the CBD.

We are aiming to raise the capital required to build the courts through a range of fundraising activities, applying for government grants and support from other clubs in Australia and internationally. To be successful we also need strong participation from the Sydney members.
