World Masters End of Tournament Individual Events Report
The World Masters Individual Championships were held at the Cambridge University Real Tennis Club from 15 – 24 May with 57 players competing and play taking place on both the blue and green courts.
The Over 50s singles final was won 6/5 6/4 by Manchester’s Simon Shenkman beating Washington DC’s Bill Barker who reached the final by overcoming GB Over 50s captain David Watson 6/3 2/6 6/5 in a thrilling semi-final.
In the higher age groups established names generally predominated but Simon de Halpert, last seen in these championships in 2010, defeated John Ward in the Over 70s singles final as well as winning the Over 70s Doubles with him and reaching the Over 65s Doubles semi-final. The outstanding player of the tournament was John Prenn who won a remarkable 4 events, beating William Maltby 6/2 6/5 in the Over 55s Singles and beating Jonathan Hamer 6/2, 6/1 in the Over 60s Singles, as well as winning the Over 55s Doubles partnering Mark Nicholls and the Over 60s Doubles partnering Jonathan Hamer.
Other leading players, in this event as in past World Masters Championships, were:

Paul Weaver, winner of the Over 65 Singles and Doubles (with Mick Dean Doubles) and a finalist in the Over 60s Doubles

Jonathan Hamer, who in addition to winning the Over 60s Doubles reached the finals of the Over 55s doubles and Over 60s Singles as well as beating US Over 50s captain Steve Hufford 6/5 5/6 6/2 in a tense quarter-final in the Over 55s singles

John Ward, winner of the Over 75s singles and Over 70s Doubles with Simon de Halpert who defeated him in the Over 70s singles

Paul Danby, winners of the Over 75s Doubles (with Tony Crook) and a finalist in the Over 75s singles and Over 70s Doubles.

Amongst the doubles specialists Mark Nicholls won both the Over 50s Doubles (with William Maltby) and the Over 55s (with John Prenn) and Graeme Richardson reached the Over 65s and Over 70s Doubles finals.
Elsewhere in the draw Allan Willingham took the first set in his Over 70s match with David Brazier 6-1 before the wily Brazier fought back to win in 3 sets. Brazier and Robin Barlow also needed 3 sets to overcome Allan Willingham and Tony Poolman and Greg Cornish and Ross Troon nearly recovered from a 0/6 loss in their Over 65s match against Bernard Weatherill and Mike McAuley.
The CURTC marking team of Kees Ludekens, Peter Paterson, Scott Blaber and Simon Stokes did an outstanding job and on the social side we were very well looked after by CURTC President George Pearson and Bernie Carpenter with a social programme that included a reception in the Master’s Lodge at Corpus Christi and dinner in the Old Kitchens at Trinity. Finally, thanks are due to the CURTC members for generously allowing their regular courts to be taken over for this event.
