Top weekend at Tonbridge

RPA showcases talent and possible new court area

The Rackets Professionals Association held their annual tournamentover the 15-17 January weekend, changing the venue from Malvern to Tonbridge pending the Malvern refurbishment being completed. Local host David Makey, Chairman of the RPA, put up a brave fight on Saturday evening to beat Peter Brake 3-1 in the semis and secure a place in Sunday morning'sFinal. But the strain of being host to dinner for 70 people clearly took its toll, and David was beaten 3-0 by Mark Hubbard from Radley in Sunday's Final. The event was kindly sponsored by Neptune Investment Management.

It was a great weekend, as always perfectly organised by the RPA. There are high hopes of holding next year's event at Malvern, assuming that the court refurbishment can be completed over the summer of 2010. In the meantime, guests at Tonbridge were treated to a tour of the possible second court area, a beautiful old gymnasium which is crying out for better use - and given the space restrictions of the site, what could be better than a rackets court....
