1st Leg World Doubles Championship

Mark Hue Williams and Harry Foster gave a spirited account of themselves at the NYRTC in New York on Saturday 18 April 2009 in sweltering temperatures - around 70 degF - which had most of the gallery, let alone the players, contemplating taking a shower. The match was very close indeed until it reached 14 all in the third game, from which point the Amateurs slowly pulled ahead, making the most of several small advantages rather than one large one. They seemed slightly fitter, made fewer errors, hit a few more aces, Foster hit some storming hard shots with full venom, and Hue Williams leapt athletically about the court retrieving almost everything. The good-humoured gallery was full and highly spirited, each point giving rise to storms of approval, foot-stomping, and applause, and several times the marker had to ask them to 'please be quiet during play'!

It all bodes well for the Second Leg at Queen's next weekend. The score line was 12 -15, 15 - 12, 17 - 14, 11 - 15, 15 - 6, and finally 15 - 8, making it 4-2 overall and 85 - 70 on points
