The first game saw Peter serve and establish a small lead, quickly clawed back once Richard and then Tom stepped into the box. With incredible rallies right from the start, the game was tight, swinging one way and then the other, but it was the World Champions who ominously closed in and finally secured the opening game 15/12. The gallery was appreciative and remained captivated, especially the large contingent from sponsors, Brown Advisory. Any signs of the earlier torment on the day’s international markets were briefly forgotten.

The second game started and Tom and Richard opened an early lead. Although Ben and Peter were playing remarkable Rackets, the Champions were playing sublimely – with each brilliant return being matched on the counter. Ben covered the court in his usual rapid style, front to back, side to side, with Peter excavating shots from the corners. All four players hit wonderful angles, matching each other’s brilliance with masterful defensive shots. Unforced errors were rare; winners were equally hard fought. But it was Tom and Richard who swept away with the second game, winning 15/4.

Games 3 and then game 4 turned into a masterclass exhibition, with the Champions giving little away and winning the key points. 15/2 15/2 seemed harsh on their opponents, who were both playing well, but they were up against two players playing at their peak.

The match ended with Tom and Richard collecting their sixth British Open title, matching the feat of John Prenn and James Male. The prize giving was orchestrated by T&RA President, David Norman, alongside Brown Advisory’s Andrew Blair. In what will be David’s last on-court appearance as President, he waxed lyrical on the supreme game the gallery had just witnessed, congratulating all four players on their contributions to a great match.
