Jamie Stout beat Will Hopton

The first game saw Hopton open a 5-1 before a supreme display of world class Rackets saw Stout take the game without conceding a point; before opening up a 7-2 lead in the second. Hopton rallied and closed the score to 9-all but it was Stout who retained the edge to take two game lead.

The third was perhaps the tightest of all the games, with both players trading points, and making the most remarkable recovery shots. Stout again worked his way ahead before Hopton pulled back to 12-13; but two superb shots later saw him establish a three game lead. More of the same at the start of the fourth, Stout being very aware of his opponent's incredible recovery from championship point 12 months ago. But Stout's shots were becoming increasingly penetrating and he inched closer to victory. On his first championship point at 14-8, Hopton played an audacious drop shot; however, a couple of points later Stout was victorious as the ball sailed into the packed gallery from Hopton's outstretched racquet.

David Norman, President of the T&RA presented the prizes, thanking both Neptune and The Queen's Club, before praising both combatants.

Friday 23rd January

The first semi-final saw Hopton beat Titchener-Barrett four games to one. Two and a half hours of world class Rackets with very few unforced errors. Hopton took the first before ATB levelled; but then Hopton showed his talent to ease the next three games. Fantastic retrieval from both players but Hopton just seemed to have the edge throughout.

The second semi-final saw Stout beat Billings in straight games.

Thursday 22nd January

The four quarter-finals produced some excellent Rackets over the two days. ATB played a tight and measured game to defeat Snell in three straightforward games. Billings dominated the first game but this inspired Coyne to level at one-all. Billings again swept ahead and the fourth game was tight, but it was Billings who came through. The following evening Hopton's all round game was too strong for Portz, although he certainly played his part in a good contest. In the final match, Owen stunned world champion, Stout, by taking the tightest of first games 17/16 - Stout missing out on a game point in the set to three. Stout dug deep to level the match with steady serving from 7-all. Owen again threatened in the third game but Stout was too strong and the fourth game became a formality.
