At this year’s Public School’s Doubles, the U15 tournament was always likely to be a straightforward victory for Eton and so it proved. Both players in their pair, Toni Morales and Charlie Braham had reached the singles final in December. The question was who would face them in the final. Tonbridge (2) and Winchester (3) reached the semi-finals untroubled and battle commenced. Winchester stormed to a 2-0 lead only for Tonbridge to show some resolution and fighting spirit to level the match at 2-2. The deciding game was tight with Winchester winning it by 15/12. The other semi-final was an all Eton affair after Eton 2 had eased through to their 4th seeded position, however they were no match for the Eton A pair. Eton went on to win the final against Winchester (Escott and Cramer) by 3 games to 0, with the 2nd game being closely contested. Morales and Braham thoroughly deserving their victory after a wonderful season.

The Colts Final was between Harrow (1) and Radley (3). The match was well contested with Radley nearly winning the fourth game which would have tied it up. Sadly for them they lost that game and the next fairly quickly. Robbie White was solid but Henry Goodfellow the Harrow second string was perhaps the key to their victory. A talented lefty, whose powerful serve and hard hitting in the rallies won many points for Harrow. They eventually ended up winning the cup 15/8, 15/1, 12/15, 16/13, 15/1.

Eton dominated the second pairs cup having their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pairs reaching the semi-finals. The first semi saw the top seeds, Eton 2 (Earle & Dashwood) beat Eton 4 in a close match. Then Eton’s 3rd pair took on Marlborough 2. The first game went all the way to the set, but after Eton edged out this game they never looked back, going on to win the match 4/0. The final was a close affair with the 3rd pair (Goldie & Courtenay) just seeing off their mates 4 games to 3, 16/13, 13/16, 15/7, 15/3, 13/18, 12/15, 15/8.

In the main event for the Public School’s Championship both first and fourth seeds scrambled through their first matches. Cheltenham (1) just saw off the gallant Malvern 4/3, with Harrow (4) beating the talented Clifton pair by the same score. Tonbridge then gave Cheltenham a real battle in the quarter-final with Jonny Maltz showing he was still a top class player after a difficult season. Tonbridge after being 2-0 behind managed to get to 2-3 before losing by 4-2. Harrow also made the favourites work, Laleet Bose serving huge backhand serves for the Harrovian’s as they took game one, but Cheltenham came back to win the next three, and had 5 match points saved in the next game before finally crossing the line, and into the final they marched.

Eton (2) had reached the final in the bottom half of the draw without much fuss, and had not conceded a game. Jamie Giddins and Max Seely were playing superbly, and many thought that they would give Cheltenham another tough encounter. This they did but could never quite get ahead in an excellent final and Cheltenham prevailed by 15/7, 2/15, 15/6, 15/11, 11/15, 15/1. They had made heavy weather of it but had seen off all-comers with some excellent defence and mental toughness. Chris Stout adding the title to that of his Foster cup at the singles and ably supported by Alex Duncliffe-Vines.

Eton deservedly won the Mark Faber Cup after an excellent season by their squad.
