Great Britain win the Bathurst Cup, beating USA in the final.
After taking a critical 2-1 lead on Friday evening, Robert Shenkman overcame Noah Motz in three straight sets to bring home the famous trophy.
Team GB beat Australia 4-1 in the first 3 days of the competition. Bertie Vallat narrowly lost out 3-1 to old rival Ollie Pridmore before Rob Shenkman equalised by beating Mike Williams 3-0. Will Flynn then teamed up with Shenkman to win the doubles 3-2. Shenkman then secured the tie beating Pridmore 3-1 to leave the holders to compete for the 3/4th playoff. Ben Yorston then won the dead rubber 2-0 against Paul Rosedale to secure the 4-1 scoreline.
In the final, Freddie Bristowe of team USA played out a Bathurst Cup epic against Shenkman eventually winning 6-5 in the 5th to make it 1-0 to team USA. Noah Motz fought back against Vallat to provide the second 5 set match of the day but Vallat secured the victory 6-0 in the final set, with the match finishing at 12.30am on Friday night.
With the score 1-1 and both 1st string players expected to win their singles matches, the doubles was going to be key. Flynn and Shenkman seemed to cope better with the 10pm start time of the match, defeating the Americans 3-0 to take a 2-1 lead.
It was then perhaps fitting that after 6 days of competition and with no rest day, Rob Shenkman was the player to win the cup for team GB beating Motz 3-0. All of the teams look forward to the next edition of the Bathurst Cup in America in 2 years time and thanks were given to the Paris club for hosting a memorable event.
