High/Low Ladies Handicap Doubles 2024
Sep 14, 2024 - Sep 15, 2024 Hatfield House LRTA - L Fairbrother, S Sullivan
The Ladies Real Tennis Association's popular High/Low tournament continued not to disappoint this weekend, with good Tennis and excellent vibes.
Famous for providing loads of delicious cake for players, the tournament moved into its new home at Hatfield House RT Club, with 12 ladies (best player paired with lowest handicap, second highest with second lowest, etc).
From the start, one pair stood out: Philippa Wells (Newmarket Real Tennis Club) and Kim Walker (Oratory Real Tennis), who swept their way past all other opponents with steady and cunning Tennis. So, no one was surprised that they took the Final in a battling 6/3 win against newcomer Katy Groome of Newmarket Real Tennis Club and Jane Taylor of Petworth of House Tennis Court —who fought to the wire but couldn't get that last point.
A number of new faces freshened up the group, coming from other sports — not just lawn tennis and squash, but also polo. We hope that next year we'll be able to play with the maximum 8 pairs, and look forward to any other sports that might add to the various styles of Real Tennis.
A fun dinner was had on the Saturday evening at a local pub with partners and billet hosts joining the group.
The LRTA thanks go to Linda Fairbrother of Cambridge University Real Tennis Club, Sarah Sullivan of Hatfield House Real Tennis Club and the Hatfield House Real Tennis Club pros John and James for the organisation and marking and to all players for coming from as far as Seacourt Tennis Club and the Société Sportive du Jeu de Paume & de Racquets of Paris.
Look out for next year’s registration details as the event returns to Hatfield House Real Tennis Club.
