MCC Silver Racquet 2026
Oct 18, 2026 Lord's B Sharp
B. Vallat bt B. Yorston 6/0 6/2 6/5
Bertie Vallat will now play Robert Shenkman (holder) for the MCC Gold Racquet on Saturday 31st October at 11am.
Benedict got off to a slow start with a number of uncharacteristic unforced errors in the first set. However, he returned to win the first game of the second set in good style. At 2-2 in the second set it was now more even although it was Bertie won the next four games to take the set, seemingly incapable of missing the grill throughout the match.
The dynamic athleticism of Benedict combined with some excellent recovery shots started to drag the balance back towards him and the longer the match went on, the more his form returned. At 5-5 and serving in the third set, Benedict had a window. However, it was Bertie who, with his impeccably consistent combination of power, touch and accuracy won the deciding game, took the set and with it, deservedly the match.
Those fortunate enough to be there enjoyed a match of high-class Tennis played with much spirit and in the best of spirit. Both players are to be congratulated.
Bertie will now progress to challenge Rob Shenkman for the Gold Racquet for a third consecutive time at MCC on October 31. One year on and on the basis of Bertie’s performance here, this has all the promise of a ‘must see’ final.
